Let me do some reading. I don’t want to go on welfare:
Exodus 22.25: If you lend money to my people, to the poor among you, you shall not deal with them as a creditor; you shall not exact interest from them.
Deuteronomy 15.11: Since there will never cease to be some in need on the earth, I therefore command you, ‘Open your hand to the poor and needy neighbour in your land.’
Psalm 10.2: In arrogance the wicked persecute the poor— let them be caught in the schemes they have devised.
Psalm 72.4: May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the needy, and crush the oppressor.
Proverbs 19.22: What is desirable in a person is loyalty, and it is better to be poor than a liar.
Proverbs 21.13: If you close your ear to the cry of the poor, you will cry out and not be heard.
Matthew 19.21: Jesus said to him, ‘If you wish to be perfect, go, sell your possessions, and give the money* to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.’
Revelation 3.17: For you say, “I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.” You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked.
And this is just a few examples. I don’t want to be Barton when he sees Jesus. Judgement will be his fate.
